Dr Laurens Bouwer is a senior scientist at the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS). He is an expert on the assessment of climate risks and has worked extensively on the use of impact and vulnerability models for flooding and other extreme weather risks. Besides the research work, he has given advise on risk management and adaptation to national and local governments, and international organisations, as well as insurance companies. At GERICS, he focusses on the use of climate data in impact assessments, and development of related services. Currently he is leading several research projects on climate risk assessment, in the sectors water and health.

He has worked on projects in Germany, The Netherlands, India, Viet Nam, Algeria, the USA, and several other countries. In addition, he has been participating as (lead) author in assessment reports of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), including the Third and Fifth Assessment Reports, the Special Report on Extremes (SREX), and the Special Report on Oceans and Cryosphere (SROCC).
